CASTANEDA & MADUCDOC. How did you get into this industry?
SARIAN. Sa agriculture?
Q. Opo, so paano po kayo nag-start sa journalism?
A. Even when I was in high school, I was already freelancing. Kasi
noong sa 2nd year high school ako nag-aaral rin ako ng typing at
stenography. My teacher was a writer who wrote short stories and poems. Pero ako
hindi ko linya yun. I wrote something that's not literary. And then
when I was in college, I augmented my allowance by writing feature
articles. Nahasa ako doon. I discovered my passion which is to write about
agriculture, and that's what I'm pursuing all this time.
Q. So sir right from the start did you imagine yourself to be a
journalist already?
A. Well, I just wanted to write.
Q. Sir who or what influenced you to enter this field?
A. Eh yun ngang teacher ko sa typing and stenography. Kasi nakikita ko
yung by line niya, binabayaran siya sa kanyang ginagawa. So I told
myself this must be something that I can do probably and earn some money
while studying without really getting employed. My teacher had a
subscription to "Writer's Digest" sa States. Eh noong makita ko hinahanap-hanap
ko rin kaya nag-subscribe na rin ako.eh yun….
Q. So sir can you please state the names of the newspapers you were
employed in and for how long were you in each?
A. Well noong una, after graduating from college 1959, ang unang job
na napuntahan ko ay sa advertising, I always want to be a freelance
writer because that is something you can do at night or whatever time of
the year. After college in 1959 was in advertising agency kasi by that
time nakikita na rin nila by line ko sa "Free Press." So it was very
easy for me to land a job as a copywriter at the same time parang account
executive na to service some accounts. But I did not stay long there
kasi now nabigyan ako ng offer na mas malaki sa isang sineservice ko na
compania, gusto nila na mag-full time ako sa kanila. And then finally,
after siguro mga 7-8 months lang, kasi at that time gaya ng sinabi ko
nagfree-free lance ako. So namasyal ako sa Los Banos, the College of
Forestry was observing its anniversary. So I thought of writing an article
about that college for the Mirror. But just a weekend Mirror noon eh,
sa Manila Times publishing. Eh it happened nagtuturo doon yung pinsan
ko sa College of Agriculture. Sabi "May opening dito, mag-apply ka."
May opening for an information writer. So nandoon ako sa Los Banos, it
was also enjoyable there, bagong mga lugar, marami akong kaibigan doon. I
stayed there for 4 years. I started an Agriculture Magazine, quarterly
lang. Sort of popular magazine, pero many of the things that I was
doing, I was editing also in the Alumni newsletter noong I was doing press
releases about the research resorts in Los Banos. So at that time also
when I was in Los Banos, I applied as correspondent to Philippine News
Service. Marami akong istorya doon na napapadala, lumalabas sa mga
diyaryo. And then also I had during my stay in Los Banos, I had a regular
column yung mga feature articles sa Banawag Magazine, yung Ilocano
Magazine published by Liwayway. And then I also had an agriculture column
doon sa Graphic Magazine and I did some other free lancing. So more or
less I was very active in writing because there were so many things to
write about in Los Banos. So medyo nagsawa na ko doon, after 4 years, I
decided to go to the Chronicle and propose to come up with a monthly
agriculture magazine. It happened, that the publisher,Oscar Lopez, was
very interested in agriculture. So immediately he hired me to start a new
magazine. It's called Philippine Farms and Gardens. And it was
overtaken by martial law. It was a profitable magazine. Right a way a lot of
subscribers and advertisers came in. At the same time when I was
handling that magazine in the Chronicle, I was also the agriculture editor of
the daily, yung Chronicle. I had a regular column tungkol naman sa
garden plants, doon sa Woman in the Home Magazine and then doon sa society
page ng Chronicle. I wrote a lot of articles that pertains to
agriculture kasi yung garden it's part of agriculture e. But there's another
focus, mostly woman gardeners. And then noong nagka-martial law, I was
Agri Business editor ng Business Day. Then at the same time, nag-umpisa
rin kami ng agriculture magazine and modern agriculture. It came out
monthly. Marami din akong nakuhang mga trips and activities all over the
Philippines. Talagang napuntahan ko lahat except Batanes. Di pa ako
nakakapunta roon ano. I don't usually use press releases ng government
agriculture offices. Ako I go out and look for my stories. I look for
people who are farming and who are successful so that I can write about
their strategies in farming. Yan ang mga ginagawa ko. It's one
interesting job. Maraming mga nakakakilala sa akin and they envy my job because I
go to the best farms, I visit them, and taste the best and newest
fruits. And I myself have my own collection of exotic fruits. Kaya marami
akong napuntahan no because of my writing. I just came from Germany last
August. Nagbisita rin ako ng mga farms doon. Mga apple farms, mga
grapes sa Japan. Several times na ako nakabisita ng mga farms sa mainland
….Taiwan. Almost nalibot ko na rin yung mga farming area ng Taiwan, sa
Indonesia, and South East Asia, Thailand. Maybe these are not
interesting to other people but to me they are exciting. That's what excites me.
Q. Sir among all the places you visited, what was the most memorable of
all and why?
A. All of them have their own memorable points. Noong una akong napunta
sa China, bawal pa ang mga billboards noong mga 1979. Eh very crude
ang kanilang agriculture. I was there just last October. Iba na, marami
ng mga progreso sa mga nagawa nila sa research. Yung bio-technology
nila, advance na advance na sila. Kagaya ng isang barrio na pinuntahan ko,
each family is willing to till the farm and allocated small parcels of
land. Pero ang ginawa nila nagform sila ng corporation. Then the
corporation rented this farm lands allocated to about 50 families. And then
yung corporation nila ang nagpatakbo and then the people who were
allocated the land were given rent and then they also were hired as the
workers but the it's the corporation that was calling the sets. Kaya you
find these things na akala mo hindi nangyayari sa corporation. Actually
there are so many things, ideas, or strategies na pwedeng applicable rin
dito.
Q. Sir when you were starting, regarding your salary, was it sufficient
to support your basic needs?
A. Iba kasi ang position ko roon. Ako ang kinaiingitan noong ibang mga
staff members doon sa Chronicle, because diretso akong hinire ng
President at that time, 1964 and minimum wage P120 a month. Pero at that time
yung P120 a month sufficient na sa isang pamilya kasi ang isang steak,
liver steak na napakalaki, P2 lang mayroon ka pang beer. Ngayon siguro
yung P2, ano ang mabibili mo doon? Ang sabi sa akin dati, "We will give
you a basic of P500 a month." At that time malaki na yun, siguro mga
P5000 at least or maybe P10000….at that time. And then sabi "We will give
you as your over ridding commission 3% of the gross from circulation as
well as advertising." So sige, biro mo yung circulation malakas kaagad
kasi yung squibb nagsubscribe ng 5000 copies for giving away to
poultry raisers kasi meron silang producto para sa poultry raisers. And then
they also placed an advertisement full page doon sa magazine every
issue. So naka-commission ako ng P800 a month. But sabi ng manager after 1
year sabi sa akin,"Medyo ano maraming naiingit sa iyo. I-fifix na lang
natin ang salary mo." But anyway na fix naman sa medyo mataastaas. It
was okay, but then meron akong bagong kotse noon. P8000 lang yung kotse
na volkswagen noon eh. Mayroon akong kinikunan na gasolinahan diyan,
monthly ko lang binabayaran basta pupunta ako doon magpapakarga. Alam mo
ang binabayaran ko doon sa isang buwan P45 lang. So ibang iba ngayon.
Q. So sir regarding your office can you describe the physical location
starting with the building where it was located?
A. Sa Aduana, sa Intramuros
Q. So sir about the equipment and the other facilities?
A. Ah, the equipment noong araw typewriter lang at saka yung sa
imprenta tingga. Pero alam mo kapag ikaw ay nasa newspapaer gustong-gusto mo
yung amot ng tinta at saka tingga.
Q. So yung sa loob ng po ng office niyo, how big was it?
A. Aba malaki, malaki ang Chronicle doon sa building diyan. Mga 2-3
floors yun.
Q. Sir may sarili po kayong room noong nagstart kayo o share….
A. Hindi kasi yung opisina open, malaki yan na open meron ka lang
table.Yun ganoon lang din diyan. Kasi ang newspapering kung yun ang
gustong-gusto mo hindi ka masyadong magtatagal sa loob e, nasa labas ka. Kaya
yun that's one of the reasons na hindi ako humanap ng ibang trabaho kasi
yung time mo very up to you. Basta makakuha na ng istorya mo kung ikaw
ay reporter you can spend your time. Hindi kagaya ng iba na you have to
be in the office 8 am upto 5 pm. Foreign service graduate ako. Then I
took up the cultural attache examination. I passed and then sabi sa akin
first year ko sa opisina noong nagtake ako ng civil service exam e,
napasa ko yun. Then they were asking me to report in foreign office at
sabi ng reporter namin nanagcocover sa foreign affairs, mamili ka ng post
mo sa abroad. Ako bahala kay Mendez kasi kaibigan niya si Richard. Eh
sabi ko nag-eenjoy ako kasi sa trabaho, wag na.Eh yun ang nangyari.
Q. Sir sino po yung mga editors na nakatrabaho niyo?
A. Editors ah, sa ano sa Chronicle si Celso Cabrera. Yan lang ang
kaigihan lang sa akin sa agriculture, eh walang alam sa agriculture ang mga
editors. So ako lang ang bahala doon eh. I have a very free hand maski
dito ngayon ako lahat ang gumagawa. Pinababahala nila sa akin.
Q. Sir were they very strict about the grammar, accuracy of the news
and work ethics?
A. Well sa grammar siyempre kailangan. Pero kung minsan sa pagmamadali
mo marami ka ring mali. Pero sa grammar, wala akong assistant, mahirap
maghanap ng medyo nakakaintindi sa agriculture at marunong sa grammar.
Kaya ang ginagawa ko na lang sa magazine ine-encourage ko ang mga
freelance writer. Kasi sa agricultural writing, kailanagan you have to have
an understanding of the realities in farming para you will know what
type of stories will be useful to your readers. Sa akin kasi hindi naman
yung mga intriga ang sinusulat ko e, something na nakakatulong. Kaya
miski photo caption lang dapat yung makakabasa sa aking gagawin
makakapulot lamang ng isang idea na makakatulong sa kanya. Dito sa akin,
karamihan ng nagbabasa sa akin mga professional farmers. Kasi ngayon
napakaraming mga educated people na nagfafarming. Hindi nagbabasa sa akin yung
mga marginal farmers. In the first place they can't afford to buy the
newspapers. But ganoon pa man yung mga fini-feature ko nakakarating sa
masa dun sa kung saan-saan sa barrio. Kasi pinipick up ng mga radyo and
aking mga sinusulat eh. Maririnig ko na lang binabalita na lang nila
yung aking pinapalabas sa diyaryo eh. Wala namang attribution akala mo
sila naman ang nag-gather ng mga istoryang ganoon.
Q. So kapag ganoon po anong ginagawa niyo, pinapabayaan niyo na lang?
A. Okay basta…
Q. Sir about deadlines, were they very strict about it?
A. Deadlines…. Well sa akin ngayon lumalabas ako na pahina 2 sa Sabado
kaya 2 ang ginagawa ko ngayon para bukas. One on Tuesdays, One on
Thursday meron akong column sa Panorama at saka yung magazine na monthly.
All these things keep me busy. Pero alam mo sa deadline nakasanayan ko na
yun pag deadline siguradp matatapos ko na yun. Marami akong litrato,
talagang litrato. I take my own pictures when I go out nakikita ko yung
may potential na paggagamitan ko ng litrato, kinukunan ko na yun. And
ah as I look at my pictures new angles yung mga istorya nakakabuo ako
eh. Ano bang significance nito? Itong halimbawa, halimbawa mayroong
litrato ng suhang kulubot-kulubot, bukol-bukol. Makakapagbigay ako ng
istorya tungkol diyan na kung paano mo ma-sosolve yung problem na yun.
Through proper time release spraying or pagbabalot ng papel ng bambuhaw.
Ganon kaya kung magbabasa ka man halimbawa may ipinipakita akong litrato
na makapagbigay ako ng impormasyon na pwedeng makatulong na ganito ang
gagawin mo kung ganoon para maiwasan ang problemang ganoon. Mga how to.
Those are the things also that I have learned that my readers would
like to know.
Q. Saan niyo po kinukuha yung knowledge na sini-share niyo sa iba, is
it through constant reading?
A. Nagbabasa ka, nagiinterview, siyempre pag nagiinterview ka gaya
nang ginagawa mo, Basta pumunta ko sa isang lugar at ma-meet ko ang mga
tao dun napakarami kong napipick up na story . . gaya nung pumunta ko sa
Davao mga three days ako dun inimbita ako sa Davao Fruit Development
Coopertive foundation. Pinakita nila yung mga farms nung member nila.
Yung isa pinuntahan namin, pinakain kami ng 7 klaseng durian na kanyang
gino-grow, merong masarap, merong mabahong mabaho, may malagkit. Those
are very interesting to my readers. Tapos tatanungin kung pano gino-grow
yung mga yun kasi magaling siyang magtanim eh. Yung mga 4 year old na
durian trees niya napaka-productive na. Kasi finifertilize nya ng
husto, tama yung irrigation, tama yung drainage, tama yung concentration.
So, dun ko kukuhain yung mga information na yun. Ano ba ang
finifertilize mo nung maliit pa yung halaman mo? Talagang you have to ask him what
he got from the beginning. Paano mo maestablish? Ano mga distancing
kung bakit napakaganda ang mga tanim mo? You really have to be
inquisitive, but when you are already into these things. . .its very easy to ask
the right questions. Yung mga iba kasi pag hindi naiitindihan, they
can't imagine what questions they would like to ask. Pero I think 40
years na nagcocover niyan eh and still I present it the way it used to be
when I was much younger. Kaya that's why nagcoconduct din kami ng
seminar. I usually serve as a resource person also and when you need to
start your own farm business. So I relate to them yung mga nakikita ko,
yung mga obserbasyon ko. In fact I have written 7 books in successful
agricultural and winning strategies. Well, napakadali na kasing
mag-imprenta ng libro eh using the computer. . .so, that's supplements my stay
here at least hindi naman ako nagugutom and nag fafarming din ako I
have a farm in. . .another one in Quezon. And at least kasi nagfafarming
ako nare-realize ko, I know the peculiar problems of the farmers that's
why yun ang basis ng aking mga sinusulat.
Q. Sir, in the span of your career, sino na po yung mga nakatrabaho
niyo na pong ibang journalist or reporter?
A. Well, marami ring reporters na iba. Pero ako kasi hindi ako
nagjo-join ng mga press conferences. Gusto ko iba eh. Gaya kung halimbawa pag
may press conference, as much as possible uunahan, bibisitahin,
pupuntahan ko na yun . That's why I have to learn how to take my own pictures
kasi if you depend on the photographers, eh mahirap eh, kung bigla kang
aalis at wala kang photographer, mahirap.
Q. Sir, diba po yung ibang reporter nagstart as cub reporter? Naging
cub reporter din po kayo dati?
A. Hindi. I ba kasi yung field ko eh. Nung nagaaral ako nagsusulat na
ako as free lancer. Marami na kong by line so I didn't go to those cub
reporting.
Q. So sir, bilang isang young writer, ano po yung best memory niyo po
nung nagsta-start po kayo?
A. Siyempre pag nakikita mo yung by line mo. That means something eh.
In the beginning maraming nare-reject na gawa mo kasi kung hindi mo pa
alam yun focus. But alam ko naman yun, kasi I have always been reading
the writer's digest this is for free lancer mostly eh talagang nandun
yung tungkol sa writer's block. Naka- influence talaga sa akin ay yung
pagsubscribe ko sa writer's digest. Kasi nandun yung mga experiences ng
mga aspiring writers din. Nandun yung mga rejection. Pero makikita mo
dun yung mga how to create story idea, looking for story ideas. As you
go along madaling madali na.
Q. So far, among all the articles you have written, ano po yung most
memorable, lik yung nagkaroon po ng malaking impact sa reader?
A. Wala yung mga blockbuster. Yung aking mga articles ay hindi yung
mahahaba, lalo na ngayon I go for very readable na maiintindihan na
makakapulutan ng useful information. That's why siguro that has always been
my trade mark, sinasabi nga ng iba that I write very readable and
practical stories. That's one of the reasons na in 1974, they gave me the
Magsaysay award for journalism and this one, kaya medyo proud ako, this
is an award that you don't apply for. It is only the trust boards and
trustees that try to choose pag-aaralan nila yung nga sinulat mo in the
last 5 years. Kung ikaw ay mag-aaply, automatic na disqualified na. I
know that kasi, last 4 years ago, I became a trustee of the foundation
na nagseselect ng mga Magsaysay awardee. One of the things na no-no,
applying or. . .the nominators or judges. Hindi ito nakukuha sa
palakasan, yung iba kasi palakasan yung award. And also 1989, yung Rotary
Club, na-recognize din ako, they give yung agri-business award of the year.
Then in the last 2 years, 1998,1999, they give the award ng DOST. Pero
hanggang 2 lang eh. Hindi na daw kami eligible ngayon. Anyway, hindi
ko naman ina-applyan yun eh. Sadly, siguro may makakakita din siguro
ng significance ng ginagawa ko. Although, most people will not
appreciate these things. Yung mga gumagamit, nagbabasa, at least alam ko
makakapulot sila ng makakatulong sa kanila.
Q. So yun po yung maco-consider niyo na greatest accomplishment niyo po
sa career niyo?
A. Well, I don't even think about any accomplishment eh. I just enjoy
doing these things eh. I don't even think that they're
accomplishments.
Q. Sir, isn't hard to look for news about agriculture? Or not really?
A. Hindi. Napakadali. Nung ngang I used to put up yung mga
agriculture magazine monthly. Then in 1986/1987 yung Mr. And Ms. Publishing.
Kasi I used to work in Manila Times after the EDSA revolution. Then in
1987 while I was editing the agricultural section of the Manila Time
sabi ni Eddie Apostol, kaibigan ko at kasama ko sa Chronicles "Dito ka na
sa Mr. And Ms., Maggagawa tayo ng weekly magazine." So gumawa kami ng
Agri-business weekly. Sabi ng mga ano. . ."hindi ka kaya mauubusan?"
"Bakit ako mauubusan there are so many things happening in agriculture?
Hindi mauubusan maski daily siguro, pero mahirap naman siguro gawin
yun. But you ran out of things to write about agriculture. Kasi halos
lahat covered ng agriculture e, kahit yang damit mong suot galing sa
agriculture yan.
Q. Sir, regarding the Martial Law, was there any pressure from the
government when you were writing at that time?
A. Wala. Kasi mas gusto nga nila yung aking ginagawa e. Because yan
ang hindi bumabatikus sa kanila. Nakakatulong pa sa economy.
Q. So sir, consistent lang yung writing niyo before?
A. Oo, wala. This is something they don't censor. Because very
constructive ang aking sinusulat. Sasabihin ko sa magso-sort nun,"itong
bagong manok na ito nakakaitlog ng 300 sa isang taon." "Wag kang
magsusulat niyan baka magover production tayo ng itlog" Sasabihin ba nila yun.
Hindi, hindi. Kaya dito nothing controversial kasi but I really enjoy
it kasi ito ang linya ko. That's my passion. If you really enjoy what
you are doing di ko pagpapalit. It's not hardwork, its something. .
.walang kahirap-hirap ito. Hindi kagaya ng iba.
Q. Sir, until up to now, you haven't encountered any difficulties or
problems regarding writing?
A. Wala e. Siguro you should interview some other people. Me, I don't
make an exciting subject e.
Q. Sir, what do you like most about what you're doing?
A. I enjoy every bits of it e. Wala akong pressure, walang makikialam
na higher ups. Ang advice lang sa akin ng chairman e, "wag ka lang
magfe-feature ng politician dun sa cover mo."
Q. Sir, your work is very time consuming? Like how many hours a day do
you work in this office?
A. Well, ang schedule ko ngayon ganito: I go to my farm in the morning,
I do my gardening in the morning. That's why siguro I get my exercise.
Then I come here, I used to arrive here after lunch. I go home after
siguro mga just before 8'o clock in the evening. Pinapalipas ko muna yung
traffic e.
Q. Sir, how about holidays, do you still work in the office?
A. Yeah, I come here. Kahapon nandito ko. Kasi may ibang gagawin . .
.But it's ok. Walang traffic. Magandang mag trabaho sa holiday walang
traffic. Dito naman walang nanggugulo sa akin.
Q. So sir, para sa inyo yung work niyo is not really work?
A. Parang laruan lang eh. Saka nageenjoy. Madami akong imbitasyon na
magbisita sa iba-ibang lugar eh. Two weeks ago, I was in Taiwan. May
nagimbita sa China. Tsaka next week mag-aagri kapihan kami sa Mindoro.
Yan! One of the things na nagustuhan ko pa. Which I think, nakatulong
sa marami, ako ang nag-organize ng Agri-kaphian in 1986, August.
Maraming nangyari dito sa Agri-kapihan. It all happened na kasi after EDSA.
May mga clippings ako kasi, pumunta ako dun sa Roxas district kasi
nandun yung mga kaibigan kong gumagawa ng scrap book, nagpapabookbind.
Ngayon along the way nakita ko yung building ng Atlas Publishing diyan sa
Roces Avenue. Nakita ko nakapskil dun yung karatola Manila Times. Sabi
ko: "Aba! Siguro marami akong kaibigan dito" Dumaan ako sa opisina.
Dun sabi ni Ben Afuang, yung editor: "Uy! Ikaw ang hinahanap ko! Gagawa
tayo ng agricultural page dito sa Manila Times, dito ka na" Sabi ko
kasi at that time meron na kong nursery. Ayoko ng full time reporter,
gusto ko yung…gagawin ko yung pahina basta I'll just become a regular
employee. Kasi yung nga nagfa-farming ako. Mas marami ako kinikita ko sa
farming kaysa dun sa kwan. Sabi ko: "Pero I like the idea, kasi yun
ang gusto ko eh." So, sabi ko: "o sige!" Kaya nung ibinigay sa akin to
handle that page sabi ko sa sarili ko: "I should be able to print
stories that I don't find on other paper. Gusto ko yung exclusive. Pero how
do I do that? Na-interview ko yung isang field producer dito. Una
kong naisip, mag-form ako ng weekend farmer's club. So that they can meet
people, mga professionals and land owners who are interested in
farming. Uso ang kaphian sa Manila Hotel dati. Sabi…gumawa ka nalang ng
Agri-kapihan. Parang kaphihan pero all about agriculture. Maganda yan.
So I can meet people,write about it. So yan ang ginawa ko. So August
3, 1986, dun sa Aristocrat. Meron pang Aristocrat dun sa Quezon
Avenue. Ang daming dumating, Si Nick Rajo was the minister of
agriculture…ang dami! Basta maraming dumating. And then, hindi magkasya dun sa isang
kuwarto. So next Saturday, in-arrage ko na sa Manila Vinta, it has
been there. Ang daming pumunta, every Saturday yan. Ang dami ko
nakilala, ang dami kong napuntahan na mga farm. Kasi dun sa agri-kapihan, we
invite people who are in agriculture yung mga hands on to relate their
ideas and their practices. So nagsha-share ng ideas. Ang nakakatuwa
dun, kasi every anniversary, sabi ng lahat: "Mag-grocery tayo ha!
Magdala tayo ng pagkain." Lahat yan nagdadala. Biro mo, may magdadala ng 2
lechon, may lechong baka, kambing, may nagdala ng 1000 balot. Ang saya
namin dun. Spontaneous ang pagdala. Yung Agri-Kapihan, sabi nga dito
walang officers dito. Kasi kung merong election mag-aaway-away tayo.
Basta walang officers, basta pupunta tayo dito, mag-aagri-kaphian tayo.
We will invite people to talk. And then fini-feature ko ngayon dun sa
column ko. Naging very popular. Up to now, meron pa din.
Q. So, sir, ngayon po with all the advancements that we have like the
computers, yung other gadgets po na na-invent na, how does technology
change the course of journalism?
A. Malaki ang pagbabago. Yung mga information madali ng i-relay.
Nag-eemail nalang. Ang gandahan kasi kung ikaw ay known na with in that
line of activity, hindi ka na mauubusan, ang daming nagpapadala ng
impormasyon sayo. Interviewhin yung ganito, pupunta kay ganito…as you go
along lalong hindi ka mauubusan.
Q. Sir, sa palagay niyo po hindi naman po makaka-affect yung
technology in the sense na mawawala yung newspaper dahil pwede po na online
nalang?
A. Ah hindi! In fact, I just read in the Forbes magazine, yung mga
website ngayon sila nagpriprint ng publication…sila may publication…may
magazine na sila ngayon. Basahin mo yung latest ng Forbes Global…yung
mga may website/online…nagpri-print din sila ng magazine nila ngayon. At
saka, alam mo kung minsan yung mga tao lalo na yung sumusulat nun,
gusto nilang I-album kasi, hindi nila maiipapakita sa bisita nila yung
nandun sa computer lalo na pag hindi marunong magcomputer yung bisita at
pagpapakitaan. There will always be a place for the printed page.
Although magbabago yan, bagong lalagyan. But I think there will always be a
place, for as long as people nagbabasa ng mga libro, magazine.
Q. So, sir, ano po yung pinakaimportante lesson ang natutunan niyo as a
journalist?
A. If you want to succeed in your line of journalism, talagang I-master
mo yung linya mo. Kailangan you should know a lot of the new
developments. Kasi ever changing ang technology sa Agriculture. Nandun na yung
mga biotechnology, NGO's at iba't-ibang interests group.
Q. So,sir, sa mga students po na katulad namin, ano po yung pwedeng
preparations ang magagawa namin?
A. Siguro, you discover for yourself yung linya na pageespesiyalyasan
mo, tsaka maganda kung ngayon palang magsususlat ka na. Kasi after a
while kung makikita na yung by line mo napakadali naman, madaming kukuha
sayo ikaw na ang mamimili.mahahasa ka kung if you start young. And then
you need to have a good knowledge, hindi lang sa history, culture,
psychology, mga ganun. You should have interest. Kasi yung pagsusulat,
maski hindi ka kumukuha ng journalism makakapagsulat ka if you have a
good grounding in different lines of literature or writing. Maganda kung
ikaw ay well rounded. But of course yung specialization mo dun ka lalo
mahahasa. If I were you, if you really want to be a journalist
magumpisa ka na magsulat. Napakaraming mapagdadalhan ng articles, yung sa
Inquirer para sa young. Nung araw ganun lahat yun pinapadalahan ko. Nung
araw sa Chronicle, nagaaral ako, meron kasi nung my most unforgetable
experience. P5 lang ang bayad…In fact nagcorrespondent din ako ng mga
the fishing news sa England,etc…Foreign…They pay well…$400. You can do
writing in your home.
